Marxist president elected in Sri Lanka

Foreign. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a 55-year-old Marxist-inspired coalition leader from the People's Power alliance, is Sri Lanka's new president.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the election with just over 40 percent of the vote after quickly taking the lead and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa declaring himself defeated early on.

Voting was 13 million of the roughly 17 million eligible voters.

The election campaign has been very busy on the economy and the conditions for emergency loans from the International Monetary Fund, IMF.
