Suicides are decreasing in the EU – increasing in Sweden

Domestic. New statistics show that the number of deaths due to suicide in the EU has decreased by 13.3 percent between 2011 and 2021. At the same time, the number of suicides in Sweden rose by 11 percent, according to Eurostat.

In 2021, 47,346 suicides were reported in the EU, which corresponds to 0.9 percent of all deaths that year.

This means an average of 10.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants , a decrease from 12.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011.

The decrease of 7,277 deaths reflects progress in mental health and suicide prevention.

In Sweden, the number of suicides has simultaneously increased from 1,113 to 1,236 during the same period, which means that suicides in Sweden increased by 11 percent.

Slovenia had the highest suicide rate in the EU in 2021 with 19.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

Cyprus had the lowest suicide rate with 2.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Greece (4.2) and Italy (5.9).

France's Limousin region recorded the highest regional suicide rate with 21.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants , while Greece's Voreio Aigaio region had the lowest at 1.5 per 100,000.

Just as in previous years, the suicide rate was higher among men than women, with men accounting for 76.7 percent of all suicides.

Most suicides occurred among people aged 45 to 64, with 17,441 deaths, making up 37 percent of the total.
