German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser ( SPD) has ordered full border controls at all German land borders from Monday, de facto closing the country to asylum immigration.

The Austrian government has now made it clear that it does not intend to take back any asylum seekers stuck at the border with Germany .

Manuel Ostermann, vice president of the Austrian police union, states in an interview with Welt that the Schengen system does not work.

— The security crisis in Germany is a direct consequence of how ineffective the Schengen cooperation is. The Schengen agreement's inability to deal effectively with migration has put Germany's security at risk, he tells Welt.

He nevertheless supports the Austrian government's refusal to accept Schengen-returned immigrants and says that Germany must either accept the current legal conditions or end its participation in Schengen.
