The suspect was born in the Syrian city of Deir al-Sor and arrived in Germany as a “refugee” from cruel and inhumane treatment in late December 2022. He applied after arriving for asylum in the city of Bielefeld.
On Friday, he carried out his knife attack against people unknown to him at the “Festival of Diversity” in Solingen. Three died and eight were injured.
This case has sparked great concern and debate about immigration policy in Germany.
Daily newspaper Bild stated that the 26-year-old Arab was covered in blood when he left to the police shortly after 11:00 p.m. local time and said:
“I am the one you are looking for”.
He is said to have been hiding in a backyard in the city since the crime took place.< /p>
The arrest comes after the so-called Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a statement published on its Amaq news site earlier on Saturday, the group said the attack had been carried out ” to avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.”
The three people who died were two men, ages 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman, authorities said. The police further say that the attacker appeared to have deliberately aimed for the throats of his victims.
