– In light of the disputed election, Venezuela's socialist regime is now doing everything it can to stifle free speech and prevent oppositional voices. With this urgent support, we want to help independent journalists to be able to report on developments and document the restrictions on human freedoms and rights that are taking place in the country, says Aid and Foreign Trade Minister Johan Forssell (M) in a statement on the government's website.
The government states that “access to information is a cornerstone in the fight against authoritarian regimes”.
The investment is described as part of the government's “ongoing work to strengthen democracy, freedom of the press and freedom of expression globally”.< /p>
The contributions will be channeled via the aid agency Sida.
