According to the New York Times, the order for a revenge attack was given by the Ayatollah during a crisis meeting of Iran's National Security Council.
How extensive the revenge attack will be this time is unclear. In a speech broadcast live from Tel Aviv on Wednesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “Israel is ready for any scenario”.
– We have struck the axis of evil, Netanyahu said.
In April, Iran launched a large-scale attack on Israel in response to an earlier Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus that killed several Iranian generals. This historic Iranian attack – described as symbolic – involved over 300 airborne weapons including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. The attack began on April 13 and continued through the night. However, a significant portion of the incoming weapons were repelled by Israeli and American defense systems, supported by, among other things, US Navy destroyers.
