The survey examines, among other things, how various factors in society affect Swedes' willingness to move.

The results show that 19 percent of Swedes between the ages of 18 and 84 have considered moving in the past four years to a new area, town or country due to increased violence and gang crime.

Otherwise, the cold climate in Sweden is the reason that the largest proportion, 20 percent, of the participants in the survey state has made them consider a move. In middle and upper Norrland, 28 percent have considered moving because of the climate, and among those aged between 30 and 49, it is 26 percent.

When asked “If you were to buy a holiday home, which country would be your first choice?” 28 percent answered Sweden and 43 percent another country. At the top among other countries is Spain with 15 percent and then Italy with 8 percent.

The three most popular holiday home countries, Sweden, Spain and Italy, are the same as when the same question was asked in the Swedish Property Agency's Sifo survey for a years ago. On the other hand, Portugal sails up in fourth place when France is pushed down to sixth place.

– Portugal was previously best known for its favorable taxes and a large percentage of home buyers moved there permanently. Now that has changed and more and more people are opening their eyes to Portugal for other reasons. Of course the warm climate but also culture, the slightly calmer atmosphere compared to Spain and the beautiful nature, continues Martin Posch, business area manager for the Real Estate Agency abroad, in a press release.

The survey has been carried out by Verian on behalf of the Real Estate Agency. It is based on 1,002 interviews with the Swedish public aged 18–84. The data collection was carried out in the randomly recruited Sifo panel between June 7 and June 13, 2024.
