Ismail Haniya, 62, was killed during the night of Wednesday in an Israeli attack in the Iranian capital Tehran.
He was there to attend the installation of the country's new president Masoud Pezishkian.
Iran's supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatens a “severe punishment” for Israel.
– We consider his revenge our duty, Khamenei says according to AP.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has declined to comment on the incident for foreign media. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken denies US involvement in the attack.
The attack in Tehran took place just hours after high-ranking Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an attack on Lebanon on Tuesday night.
Assessors warn that what has happened is an escalation and that the risk of major war has now increased. In a statement, the Arab country Qatar condemns the attack in Tehran and writes that this type of event means that the Middle East risks ending up in chaos.
