Knife attack in Southport

Protesters, who according to the Daily Mail are believed to be supporters of anti-Muslim English Defense League (EDL), chanted “English till I die” and threw rocks, bottles and fireworks at the police.

The crowd also threw bricks at a mosque, according to the BBC. A police car, other cars and garbage cans were set on fire. 22 officers were injured, eight of whom suffered more serious injuries such as fractures, cuts, a suspected broken nose and concussion.

Another officer who was knocked unconscious and others suffered serious facial and head injuries. Three police dogs were also injured, two of which had bricks thrown at them.

Video clips from the incident show objects being thrown at police officers:

The riots broke out after a large memorial service was held in Southport to honor the victims. Three girls were murdered in the attack and several other children, as well as two adults, are seriously injured.

Daily Mail states that the riot may be due to false rumors that the perpetrator was a Muslim asylum seeker. In fact, the person arrested is a 17-year-old African who was born in Britain but whose family immigrated from the Christian African country of Rwanda.

EDL founder Tommy Robinson and others involved on social media instead state that the reason that the violence broke out was that a masked immigrant with a knife was at the memorial service. The man must have been arrested by the police.

Local Muslim groups and authorities condemn the violence and call for calm. The police emphasize the importance of not speculating about the perpetrator's identity while the investigation is ongoing.
