S politician: Ban fathers from leading the bride to the altar

Domestic. The priest and church politician Sara Waldenfors (S) wants for feminist reasons to ban the tradition of the father leading his daughter to the altar during her wedding.

Sara Waldenfors has put forward the proposal to ban the traditional handover of the bride in a motion to the church meeting, Dagen reports.

She claims that the tradition is a remnant of the time when the father was a guarantor of the daughter's virginity, and compares it to forced marriage and and similar in the third world.

The priest Leif Nordlander, warns that this type of proposal does not help the Church of Sweden, which is already struggling with membership loss.

– I think it can have negative consequences from outside whether members of the Church of Sweden want to remain members. We don't need to give any additional reasons for people to leave the church, he tells Dagen.
