The result of the election is a big disappointment for the US, which worked to overthrow the socialist president.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken immediately came out and questioned the election results when they were announced. He says the United States has “serious concerns that the announced result does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people”, reports BBC News.

Ahead of the election, Elon Musk had also been called in to urge the people of Venezuela to vote for a liberal woman.

According to the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, when 80 percent of the votes were counted, Maduro had received 51 percent of the vote. His main rival, Edmundo González, had to settle for 44 percent.

Maduro is celebrating the victory as a “triumph for peace and stability,” while the opposition accuses the government of electoral fraud and claims its election observers were prevented from monitoring the vote count .
