SVT Nyheter Skåne has interviewed friends Emelie Andersson, 29, and Martina Hildingsson, 39 – who have both chosen to become Muslims.

Emelie tells about how she started crying and was completely “taken” when she read the Koran for the first time.

– It was a relief in the body. It felt like this is what I need, she says.

She also states that the choice to only veil was “the best” in her life.

Martina also describes how proud she is about wearing a veil.

– I am proud of my veil. Some have had different opinions about my veil, but I have also been treated well. I am the same person as before, only that I have something on my head.

The feature has received harsh criticism and thousands of comments on social media.

“Tax-funded SVT works hard for Islam and its variants!” reads a typical response.

On Facebook, SVT chose to close the comment field for the article after 721 comments had time to be published.

“We thank you for the lively debate. This is a question that obviously engages many. We are thus closing the comment field for this particular report,” writes SVT.

One of those who reacted to the feature is the journalist and author Jens Ganman, who himself previously worked at SVT.

SVT's normalization of the patriarchy continues with undiminished strength. And everything that Western feminism has said it hates for decades, they suddenly find exciting and enriching. Fascinating. https://t.co/iCTE67Ibdm pic.twitter.com/U2N0wudrtw
