EU Parliament's first resolution: Condemns Orban's peace efforts

EU. The newly elected European Parliament hammered through a resolution on Wednesday that, among other things, condemns Viktor Orban's trip to Moscow to talk peace with Putin.

Members believe the visit did not represent EU and that it constituted an obvious violation of the EU's treaties and common foreign policy.

The politicians also want this violation to be met with penalties for Hungary.

A recent attack on a children's hospital in Ukraine also highlights the “irrelevance” of Viktor Orbán's peace efforts, according to the resolution.

In addition to condemning Orban, the resolution contains demands that the EU work actively to maintain international support for Ukraine. The Union shall provide military support to Ukraine as long as necessary and in the form required. Parliament also calls on the EU to maintain and expand its sanctions policy against Russia and Belarus, while simultaneously monitoring, reviewing and improving its effectiveness and impact. MEPs also want the Council to systematically address the problem of EU-based companies, third parties and third countries circumventing the sanctions.

Members also welcome the recent EU decision to use Russian assets stolen by the West to support Ukraine's war efforts. They also call for a “sound legal regime for the confiscation of Russian state-owned assets frozen by the EU”.

Parliament also relays the outcome of the recent NATO summit and reiterates its belief that Ukraine is on an irreversible path towards membership of military alliance. The members call on the EU and its member states to increase their military support to Ukraine as long as it is necessary and in the form required. They also want the European Commission to propose long-term financial support for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

The resolution was adopted with 495 yes votes, 137 no votes and 47 abstentions.
