Domestic. Minister of Defense Pål Jonson (M) has signed a declaration of intent on cooperation between Sweden and the American state of New York.

The cooperation will mainly take place between the Armed Forces and the National Guard in New York, within the framework of the US's so-called State Partnership Program (SPP).
– The agreement with the state of New York further strengthens cooperation in the field of defense between Sweden and the US. It contributes to increased exchange between the Armed Forces and the New York National Guard, which increases the defense capability, says Defense Minister Pål Jonson in a statement.
In April 2023, the Swedish government applied to be nominated for the SPP cooperation, and the US The Minister of Defense decided in June 2024 that Sweden should be offered cooperation with New York.
On July 12, a declaration of intent on cooperation was signed by Marcos Soler, deputy chief responsible for public security in the state of New York, and Major General Raymond F Shields, and Defense Minister Pål Jonson and Major General Johan Pekkari. The signing took place in One World Trade Center in New York.
Concretely, the collaboration is implemented in a detailed plan with joint activities between the New York National Guard and the Armed Forces. Other actors may also be included.
“The cooperation must be based on the different needs of the two parties and aims to increase the military capability. The joint activities can, for example, involve sharing concepts, ideas and lessons learned, to conduct joint exercises or to participate in each other's exercise activities. To support the cooperation, the New York National Guard will place a liaison officer at the American Embassy in Stockholm,” writes the Armed Forces on its website.
