Senegal Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko raised the issue of migration this weekend. This after at least 89 people were killed in a shipwreck off the coast of Mauritania last week.
– It's a shame, it's deplorable. I appeal again to young people: your solution is not in the boats, he said in a speech before hundreds of young people, reports Le Monde.
Ousmane Sonko continued:
– The countries that some young people want to move to, I can assure you that they themselves are in crisis or at the beginning of a crisis. The future of the world is in Africa, and you young people must be aware of this. The only continent that still has significant room for progress and growth is Africa.
More than 5,000 people died trying to reach Spain illegally by sea in the first five months of the year. This corresponds to 33 deaths per day, according to the Spanish organization Caminando Fronteras. This is the highest number of daily deaths since the organization began collecting data in 2007.
