Domestic. Three out of five so-called transgender people are out of work – and it is especially men who have changed their legal gender to female who do not work, shows a thesis from the University of Jönköping.

In the study, over 900 transgender people in Sweden, who have changed their legal gender between 2013 and 2020, have been studied in population register data. These have then been compared with their normal siblings.

The results show that three out of five trans people are without a job – and it is mainly men who think they are women who are not working, especially after they have changed their legal gender .

– So far, very few studies have been done on how transgender people fare in the labor market, mainly due to a lack of data. I saw using Swedish administrative data as an opportunity to begin to address this gap in the research and explore how the results may differ between trans men and trans women. In Sweden, I find a significant difference in the employment rate. The results suggest that equal skills and education do not mean equal employment opportunities for transgender people, said Erwan Dujeancourt, the researcher behind the new thesis, in a statement.

In terms of earnings, women who identify as men have 35 percent less earnings on average than their normal siblings. Men who identify as women, on the other hand, have 21 percent higher earnings – but thus have lower employment after changing their legal gender.

Economic differences between individuals in same-sex and heterosexual relationships is another point that the thesis looks at more closely on. People who belong to sexual minorities own homes to a lesser extent than their siblings. In addition, a significant proportion of people who belong to sexual minorities have a disadvantage in terms of their net worth. Income differences between siblings do not explain this gap.
