Google wants to sign a licensing deal with well-known record companies to use music from well-known artists as training data for an unreleased AI tool. That tool should be released later this year and may become part of YouTube Shorts.
It appears that the tool will allow creators in YouTube Shorts to quickly generate clips in the style of certain artists, such as Dream Track already does within YouTube for some creators. This concerns music from dozens of artists, Financial Times reports based on its own sources. To this end, it has promised an undisclosed amount to Sony, Warner and Universal, three of the largest record companies in the world.
The deals, if they go through, are for one-time use and therefore have a different construction than those for music streaming services , which have a continuous character. YouTube does not directly confirm the information, but does say: “ We are always testing new ideas and learning from our experiments; it is an important part of our innovation process. We will continue on this path with AI and music.”
