TwittraShare< p>Ten years ago, young men aged 18–25 had a median debt of SEK 11,700, and young women one of SEK 8,300.

Now young women's median debt has caught up with men's. Today, the median debt in the group of young women who have debts with the Bailiff is SEK 16,250, SEK 50 lower than that of men.

– We know from previous surveys that young women's debts are often linked to consumption. It is worrying that the sums are now increasing at this rate, says Davor Vuleta, personal finance spokesperson at the Kronofogden, in a press release.

The proportion of individual cases, which includes luxury consumption, constitutes 83 percent of women's total debt but only 47 percent of men's. At the same time, men have almost twice as much tax debt as women.

For young men, things like compensation to crime victims account for 39 percent of the amount owed, while the corresponding figure is 8 percent for young women.
