The originally Dutch chipmaker Nexperia will make wide-bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride in the German city of Hamburg. There is already a factory there and Nexperia is going to expand it.

The wide-bandgap semiconductors are used in data centers and electric vehicles, among other things, when a lot of power is needed. The production of the first high-voltage diodes based on silicon carbide and gallium nitride will start this month.
Nexperia wants to develop more techniques for wide-bandgap semiconductors in the next two years, the company writes. In addition, it will invest money in switching to 200mm wafers and building more R&D facilities. In total this amounts to approximately 184 million euros. Nexperia is owned by a Chinese owner.
