The proposal was presented by the M leaders and ministers Ulf Kristersson, Elisabeth Svantesson and Gunnar Strömmer at a press conference today.

– Within the framework of the Tidö collaboration, the moderates have launched an unprecedented offensive against the criminal gangs. An absolutely decisive part in the fight against gang crime is the camera offensive that the government is now implementing step by step. Now the Moderates are presenting the next step – a doubling of the number of police cameras next year, says Ulf Kristersson.

Since the change of government, the number of cameras has increased sharply. New legislation is also planned for next year which will give the Police Authority expanded opportunities to use camera surveillance and which will enable municipalities and regions to set up cameras without requiring a permit.

The moderates propose a new ambitious goal for the Police Authority which means a doubling of the target for 2024 – from 2,500 to 5,000 surveillance cameras in the coming years. The technical ability of the police linked to camera surveillance also needs to be strengthened, according to the party. This involves, among other things, the development of technology linked to access to other actors' cameras, for example those of the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Customs Administration and public transport companies, as well as increasing technical analysis capabilities.

The moderates also want a “camera coordinator” to be established to support and push authorities, municipalities and regions in their work with increased camera capabilities.
