Record labels are suing AI companies Suno and Udio for copyright infringement

The RIAA and several record labels are suing Suno and Udio. The two AI companies are accused of widely infringing copyrighted works. Both startups offer the ability to generate music based on a prompt.

The Wall Street Journal writes that the Recording Industry Association of America has filed a lawsuit against Suno in the US state of Massachusetts, followed by Udio in New York. The indictments name several major labels as victims, including Universal, Sony and Warner. The documents indicate that Suno and Udio used copyrighted works on the Internet without permission to train AI models.

For example, the companies reportedly made it possible to generate music that closely resembles songs such as “American Idiot” by Green Day or “All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey. In addition, certain generated songs contain vocals that sound virtually identical to those of famous artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and ABBA.

Plaintiffs request that the court confirm that Suno and Udio have in fact infringed copyright laws protected sound recordings. It also seeks an injunction banning the AI companies from future use of this material and imposing damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work.
