p>Where OLED uses one layer that provides light, tandem OLED uses two of these RGB components. These layers are placed on top of each other and work together in a so-called tandem can display a three times higher brightness.
Power consumption should also be reduced by up to forty percent, which should benefit the battery life of laptops. In addition, the double layer should ensure that the screen wears out less quickly. According to LG, the lifespan of the tandem panels is twice as long as conventional OLED screens.
The tandem OLED panel that has gone into mass production has a resolution of 2880×1800 pixels and offers one hundred percent DCI-P3 color coverage. LG has also built a touch sensor into the panel to improve the screen's performance when touched. Apple also uses tandem OLED displays in its new iPad Pro 2024 models. The stacked screens should improve the brightness of the tablets. Apple promises a peak brightness of 1600cd/m² for HDR images. The panels in the new iPad Pros are also made by LG Display. LG first brought the technology to the market in 2019. The company also previously worked on a 17″ version of a foldable tandem OLED screen.
