“Sometimes you have to make decisions even when you realize that it has negative consequences for yourself. But I don't regret it!” writes Ellen Juntti on Facebook.
The moderates' group leader Mattias Karlsson comments on the decision in a comment to the Alting:
“Breaching the parliamentary group's rules of procedure and going against the common political stance can have consequences, which it has now been given to the member in question. It is therefore not about a deviant opinion on the matter but that the member did not follow the common rules of the parliamentary group.”
Both Juntti (M) and Patrik Björck (S) went against their respective party line and voted no to the gender reassignment law, which among other things makes it possible for 16-year-olds to change their “legal sex”. Shortly after the vote, Björck had to leave his seat on the tax committee.
For politicians to defy the party line and vote according to their own conscience is very unusual in Sweden, and is severely punished. Instead, the politicians are only expected to press the button that their group leader tells them to press.
Ellen Juntti is still a deputy in the justice committee.
