Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, is starting a new company. The company is called Safe Superintelligence Inc. and will focus solely on developing safe artificial intelligence.
Sutskever announced the founding of the new company on social media. In a statement, the company says it is working to create a powerful 'superintelligence' with safety as its top priority. It also mentions the external performance pressures that large companies face. “Our single focus means we are not distracted by management overhead or product cycles,” SSI says. “Our business model means that safety, security, and progress are not subject to short-term commercial pressures.”
SSI is being founded by Sutskever in collaboration with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. The former is the former head of AI at Apple, while Levy previously worked at OpenAI as an engineer. The new company says it will have offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.
Ilya Sutskever was a board member at OpenAI until late last year and helped plan the ouster of CEO Sam Altman, Reuters notes. Days later, he said he regretted his involvement and called on the board to reinstate Altman. Sutskever stepped down from the board when Altman returned.
He left OpenAI in May, but the CEO did not give a reason for his departure. He did hint at the arrival of a new project. Shortly afterwards, researcher Jan Leike also left OpenAI, saying that he believed that security processes surrounding the development of AI models had been 'relegated to the background' by 'shiny products'.
