Android CEO leaves position during reorganization within Google

Dave Burke, one of Google's top people in Android development for ten years, is going to do something different within the company. His departure is part of a reorganization within Google, which will merge the operating systems and device divisions.

Burke, whose official title is 'VP of engineering', is known for the Google keynotes on developer conference I/O, where he discussed new Android features. In a post he says he is moving into an advisory role in the field of AI and biotechnology, but he does not say what exactly it is.

His wording seems to indicate that he made the decision himself to leave. This comes at a time when Google is merging its operating system development divisions such as Android and ChromeOS with its hardware development divisions such as Pixel phones and Chromebooks, 9to5Google reports. This merger causes a reorganization within the company.

A concrete consequence of the merger of the teams is now known. Google says it will bring the Android kernel and frameworks into ChromeOS. What will happen next after this merger is as yet unknown.
