The resolution, which was tabled by the United States, was voted through by 14 of the members of the Security Council. Russia abstained from voting.
According to the US, Israel is favorably disposed to the proposal, which contains a three-step plan. Hamas also welcomes the resolution, according to Reuters.
The first step in the plan involves a six-week ceasefire, including the release of both hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Gazans should be allowed to return to their homes and deliveries of humanitarian aid should take place.
In the second phase, the fighting should be permanently stopped and Israel should withdraw from the Gaza Strip. The third step means that the reconstruction work of Gaza begins.
