In a post on X, Jimmie Åkesson writes that SD's election results were disappointing.
“Actually almost a shock. For myself and for many others,” he continues.
He further notes that the EU election is “a difficult choice” for SD as many of the party's potential voters ignore voting.
“There will be a lot to think about, a lot to delve into and perhaps also a lot to say. The work with the post-election analysis, which the party board started today, however, must take the time needed for it to be good. It will be an important basis for the Swedish democratic successes that are still ahead of us”, writes Åkesson.
However, results are not “an undivided failure”, according to the SD leader. Among other things, the party retains its three mandates. At the same time, left-liberal party groups in parliament lost heavily, “in favor of groups and parties that have a much more healthy approach to many issues that are close to the hearts of us Sweden Democrats”.
“Even our own party group is growing strongly and is now significantly stronger than before the election”, writes Jimmie Åkesson and continues: “Our opportunity to influence the Union in a better direction has thus improved significantly. The Swedish Democratic delegation in the European Parliament, headed by Charlie Weimers, is coming in the near future work on making the most of the new situation and finding majorities to make what we promised our voters a reality. Not least to strengthen the EU's external border and make our streets safer.”
