The growing anger among Maldivian residents against Israel's actions in Gaza has led to that opposition parties and coalition partners have pressured President Mohamed Muizzu to take action.

According to the president's office, the law must be changed to prevent people with Israeli passports from traveling to the Maldives. A special committee is to be created to oversee the implementation of the decision.

Israel is responding by urging its citizens to avoid travel to the Maldives and to consider leaving the country if they are already there.

” If problems arise, it will be difficult for us to offer assistance,” reads a statement from Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2023, approximately 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives, which represents 0.6 percent of the country's tourism.
