Open source game engine Godot gets support for Wayland display server

Open source game engine gains support for Wayland display server. A first experimental feature is in beta. This is still a test, which the makers have been working on for more than two years.

The developers behind Godot describe the support in the release notes of Beta 1 of Godot 4.3. It will officially receive support for Wayland, the display server that is being implemented by more and more Linux distributions. The developers behind Godot write that users have been asking for support since 2014, but that it was only now possible to put it in the game engine. According to the makers, this was two years in the making. Godot had been working on support since 2020, but at the time the architecture was not ready for this according to development.

The support for Wayland is accompanied by support for OpenGL ES driver for desktops. For the time being, this only works for Linux devices and not yet on Windows.

The developers of Godot warn that Wayland is still a work in progress. The makers eventually want Wayland to have the same status as the current X11 support, but the latter will remain the standard for the time being. Developers can enable Wayland by using the –display-driver wayland command.

The Godot 4.3 beta also includes an optional Direct 3D 12 backend for Windows users, for users who want an alternative want for APIs like Vulkan or OpenGL.
