'TikTok offered US government control over top of American branch'

ByteDance has offered the US government a veto on appointments to TikTok's US branch. The government could also have appointed the entire board of the American division. The US government did not accept the offer.

ByteDance called it Project Texas, reports The Washington Post. The company also wanted to pay for an external company that could have monitored TikTok's source code on behalf of the American Defense, the newspaper writes based on a copy of the offer. ByteDance would have made that offer in 2022.

It is unknown why the government rejected the offer. In the meantime, American politicians have passed a law requiring ByteDance to sell the American branch of TikTok. The company has one year to do this. In the meantime, ByteDance is challenging the law, calling it unconstitutional. This proposal will probably be part of ByteDance's defense to show that the law was not necessary.
