Public Prosecution Service demands two years in prison against two Dutch users of Genesis Market

The Dutch Public Prosecution Service demands a two-year prison sentence against two men who bought bots via Genesis Market. The former dark web marketplace was taken offline in April 2023 during Operation Cookie Monster. One of the men is a man in his forties from Leeuwarden who bought 59 bots, reports RTV Noord. He also penetrated the computer systems of three people, with which he stole more than 900 euros. The other man is from Sneek. He bought 23 bots, and also had a list of login details and passwords of 12.5 million people. However, the damage he caused was limited. The Public Prosecution Service is also demanding a two-year prison sentence against him, although six months of that is conditional. In addition, a 22-year-old man from Kolham must appear in court. He bought 247 bots and had lists with hundreds of login details and passwords. The man did not manage to take any loot during his actions. He is being sentenced to 180 hours of community service and five months of conditional juvenile detention.

Genesis Market was an international illegal trading platform, where users could buy bots and packages with credentials upon invitation. The platform was taken offline during an international police action called Cookie Monster. The three men emerged during that investigation.

A total of seventeen Dutch people were arrested during the action. Most of them are no longer in custody. In January this year, a Dutch 'bulk consumer' was sentenced to five years in prison. Two other Dutch people have already been sentenced to prison terms.
