The agreement is based on Sweden's combined military and civilian aid to Ukraine of at least SEK 105 billion for the period 2022–2026.

– Ukraine is not only fighting for its own freedom, but also for our freedom, said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) in connection with the signing .

The focus of the agreement is military support, but other areas are also covered. Sweden will continue to contribute to Ukraine's reconstruction and support Ukraine's reforms and preparations for future membership in the EU and NATO. Sweden will also provide support for accountability for Russian crimes in and against Ukraine.

The prime minister and the president signed the agreement in connection with the Nordic-Ukrainian summit currently underway in Stockholm.

Sweden is one of around 30 countries that joined the declaration on long-term support for Ukraine that the G7 countries, the EU and Ukraine agreed on in Vilnius last July. Sweden's agreement on security cooperation with Ukraine is a result of that declaration.
