KPN will set up private 5G networks for companies

KPN has started offering a service for private 5G networks for companies. These networks remain online, even if the KPN network experiences a disruption. In addition, the network handles data traffic locally.

The service is called Campus, KPN reports. The intention is that companies can use it for connections that must remain online at all costs, no matter what happens in the outside world. “For example, the network capacity can be fully allocated to certain mission-critical applications, such as controlling autonomous vehicles and robots or augmented reality applications.”

With a private 5G network, which is possible thanks to 5G network slicing technology , a company can use its own piece of spectrum at its own location. 5G functions like WiFi, with the advantage that out of range the data connection can be maintained via the regular 5G network. Despite being a 5G technology, Campus also works with 4G equipment, says KPN. Details about prices and conditions of the service are not publicly available online.

There will be two variants: a 'dedicated private 5G', where the spectrum and network core belong to the customer, and a 'local breakout' variant , which concerns a virtual private network without its own hardware.
