Microsoft Automatic Super Resolution only works with Snapdragon X-socs

Microsoft Automatic Super Resolution appears to be limited to Copilot+ computers for the time being. A Microsoft support page shows that at least a Snapdragon X processor is required to run the upscaling technology.

According to Microsoft, the Snapdragon X processor must also have a Hexagon GPU and an integrated GPU. The recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus and Elite chips meet these requirements and are therefore eligible. It's unclear whether the company will adjust system requirements soon to allow more PC gamers to use the upscaling technology. Microsoft also writes that the device must have at least a display with 1080p resolution and that the computer must run at least Windows 11 version 24H2.

There are currently twelve games that officially support AutoSR, including The Witcher 3, Control, Dark Souls III, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Resident Evil 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, God of War and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Microsoft claims that most games that support DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 are also compatible with AutoSR. Games that use DirectX 9 or only run on x86 systems are not supported for the time being. Emulated x64 games and Arm64 games are eligible again.

PC users will be able to enable AutoSR on a per-game basis. This is done via the graphics settings section in the settings menu of Windows 11 version 24H2. Users who have activated the function will see a notification when starting a game stating that the AutoSR is active. It is not clear how Microsoft Automatic Super Resolution performs compared to the other upscaling techniques from AMD, Intel and Nvidia.

It is not the first time that Automatic Super Resolution has been in the news. At the beginning of this year, tech website Neowin discovered the function in a test version of Windows 11. Microsoft is also working on a standardized interface for the third-party upscaling technology: DirectSR. DirectSR should facilitate the implementation of upscaling technology, such as Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel /tweakers.net/i/aTunYtT-9v65V9mLg-khZ636rCk=/656x/filters:strip_exif()/i/2006724946.png?f=imagenormal” /> Settings menu Microsoft Automatic Super Resolution – Source: Microsoft
