Ukraine's heavy losses and difficulties in mobilizing its own population means the EU will increasingly turn to relying on conscripted young Europeans to fight against Russia.
It said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó after a meeting with EU foreign ministers, reports Remix News.
– Ukraine's losses are becoming more and more unbearable. Ukrainian men are not allowed out of Ukraine, and now they want to recruit European youth to the war. And one can almost clearly hear the argument that the soldiers should be sent from the immediate geographical area first. This means they want to send Central European youth, including Hungarian youth, to the war with mandatory European conscription, Szijjártó said.
The Hungarian minister went on to say that he will firmly oppose any effort to impose conscription on the EU -level.
– Don't touch the Central Europeans, don't touch our Hungarian youth. We will not allow Hungarian youth to be involved in the war, because this is not our war.
Szijjártó did not reveal which foreign ministers or member states are investigating the possibility of an EU conscription, but recently several countries have announced that they may consider sending their own soldiers to Ukraine in case Russia achieves a breakthrough on the front – including France and the Baltic states.
A long-term goal of the left-liberal establishment in Brussels is to create its own defense force and to transfer responsibility for defense to the Union. With such a proposal, a potential conscription effort could arise that covers all EU member states.
