Amazon will invest 15.7 billion euros in AWS infrastructure in Spain

Amazon will invest 15.7 billion euros in its AWS infrastructure in Spain. The company will therefore significantly expand the data centers in the Aragón region, which have been operational since the end of 2022. An unknown part of the amount must go to sustainability compensation.

Amazon says it will make the investment between now and 2033. The company does not provide further details on how the amount of 15.7 billion euros will be divided, but says it will go towards expanding the AWS Europe (Spain) Region. The Web Services infrastructure, eu-south-2, was put into use in November 2022 and runs in data centers in Aragón in the north of Spain.

The 15.7 billion euros is an expansion of the 2 .5 billion euros that Amazon pledged in 2021 for the development of eu-south-2. Amazon says it will use part of the targeted amount for sustainable initiatives, including to meet its own sustainability goals. For example, the company wants to offset all emissions by 2040 and be 'water positive' by 2030. The company also wants to invest money in training programs in the region, but Amazon does not say what amounts this involves. The company points to previous funds it started in 2022; Amazon spent 264,000 euros on this.
