The immigration-critical newspaper Nya Tider has received annual press support in the amount of many millions for ten years .

But now it's over.

The Media Support Board writes in its decision to deny grants that Nya Tider does not conduct relevant local or regional news broadcasting. The newspaper is further stated to only have “5,000 regular users”.

“In light of the fact that Nya Tider has a relatively low proportion of regular users in terms of the national media market, the committee finds that Nya Tider's news coverage and editorial content are not of such significance for journalistic diversity or the range of news on the national media market that Nya Tider can be considered to be of particular importance for media diversity,” writes the committee.

The Media Support Board has decided on this year's distribution of the new media support that was introduced in January 2024. The grant has been granted to 166 media, which will share in 810 million tax kroner through the four forms of support.

Many media that lived on grants for a long time are going now miss out on this birth hook. In addition to Nya Tider, this also applies to the immigration-critical Insight24 and Epoch Times.

However, Nya Tider is granted transitional support of SEK 4.55 million for this year. The transitional support, which can be given to daily newspapers that have received operating support, will be distributed in smaller and smaller annual portions until 2028, when the last payment will take place.

On the right-hand side, the newspapers Bulletin, Fokus and Kvartal will also lose their support. However, all of them receive transitional support.

Several left-wing newspapers will also have to do without subsidies in the future: The Communist Party's newspaper Proletären, Socialist alternative's newspaper Offensiv, social democratic AiP, Flamman, Arbetaren, Feministisk perspektiv, Fria Tidningen and Syre.

The only national newspaper with a left-wing profile that is granted editorial support is Dagens ETC.

The new media support includes four new forms of support. Of the roughly one billion that the Media Support Board has to distribute, SEK 810 million was granted in general editorial support, extended editorial support and transition support. Transitional support has been provided in full to those applicants who previously had operating support and who met the conditions for support.

– It has involved a lot of work for the media support committee to familiarize themselves with the new regulations and to land on the assessments that are included in it. The media authority has had a good collaboration with the committee. I am happy that we can now present their decision so that newsrooms – which have been deemed to meet the conditions – can receive the money they need to carry out the important news coverage, says Jan-Olof Lind, director general at the Media Authority, in a statement.

Fria Tider has never applied for or received grants from the state and is therefore not affected by the changes.
