AddComm hit by ransomware, delivered water board tax assessments

The Dutch customer communications company AddComm has been hit by a ransomware attack. One of the customers of this company is the water board Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier, which may have been indirectly affected by the cyber attack.

AddComm discloses the incident in a blog post and says it is investigating the consequences of the ransomware attack with security experts . In this attack, the company's systems were encrypted and data was stolen. The incident took place between May 5 and 17. It is not yet clear exactly which data has been stolen and who is behind the attack.

The HHNK water board preventively reports that it used the services of AddComm and may therefore have become an indirect victim of the cyber attack. The water board says that the affected company sent water board tax assessments both by post and digitally to customers in the relevant region. If data from the HHNK has been stolen, according to the water board it may include names, addresses, places of residence and citizen service numbers.

The HHNK has therefore made a provisional report to the Dutch Data Protection Authority. It is not clear whether AddComm has already done this. The customer communications company does say that a police report is being prepared.
