– Krister Berg is the nature photographer of the year 2023. He is awarded the prize for his outstanding eye and ability to see the greatness of the small landscape in our Swedish nature. Krister Berg's visual art, usually expressed in black and white, takes the viewer into an ingenious design language that is only reserved for the greatest of photographers. In this time when environmental awareness and sustainability are of the utmost importance, Krister Berg is also an example, as his images are often taken from his immediate environment, says Björn Risinger, general manager.
Krister Berg was born in 1962 in Piteå in a family who spent much of his time in the mountains and in the archipelago. It sparked his early interest in photography. At the age of 20, he started taking photographs during his studies. Later he made a living as a photographer. During the 21st century, he made large nature photography projects, for example the book “Södra Lapland”, and a comprehensive documentation about the Piteälven. Since 1996, he has been a member of Naturfotograferna.
– So fantastic fun to be noticed in this way. I am passionate about the local nature and the importance it has for the city's inhabitants. There is magic around the corner, says Krister Berg in a statement.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency annually awards the Nature Photographer of the Year award to a documented skilled nature photographer who has shown knowledge and commitment to nature conservation issues and contributed to asserting the interests of nature conservation through his photographic activities in Sweden.
