OpenAI signs deal with News Corp to use WSJ articles in ChatGPT

OpenAI has signed a deal with News Corp to use content and expertise from its media in services such as ChatGPT. As a result, OpenAI now has permission to generate answers based on articles from The Wall Street Journal, among others.

News Corp will also provide expertise to ensure 'journalistic standards' in the answers from OpenAI's services, according to the businesses. This is a five-year deal worth $250 million, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Companies such as OpenAI are seeking deals with major media companies to avoid lawsuits and jurisprudence. The use of articles and statements from media companies within AI services is a legal gray area. Since the end of last year, The New York Times has been suing OpenAI for the use of articles as training data.

Since then, OpenAI has closed several such deals. OpenAI previously signed deals with the Associated Press news agency, German publisher Axel Springer, Le Monde from France and Prisa Media from Spain. There is also a deal with Financial Times and Reddit.
