GlobalFoundries loses third place in chip makers market to Chinese competitor

AMD spin-off GlobalFoundries has lost its third place in the chip manufacturing market to the Chinese SMIC, according to analyst firm Counterpoint Research. GlobalFoundries' market share shrank. TSMC remains by far the market leader.

TSMC increased its market share from 61 to 62 percent, Counterpoint calculated. Samsung remains the global number two and went from 11 to 13 percent, mainly due to the Exynos Socs in the Galaxy S24 smartphones. The Galaxy S23 only has Qualcomm Snapdragon smartphones on board. SMIC is now number three, with a 6 percent market share, followed by UMC and GlobalFoundries in fifth place.

A year ago, GlobalFoundries still had 7 percent of the market, but the American chip manufacturer now has 5 percent. per cent. The total turnover of chip manufacturers grew by 12 percent last quarter compared to the same period a year ago.
