Foreign. Norway recognizes Palestine as a state. This was announced by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

According to Jonas Gahr Støre, Palestine has a fundamental right to an independent state.
– The goal is to achieve a Palestinian state that is politically cohesive, based on the Palestinian Authority, he says.
A two-state solution “is in Israel's best interest”, according to the the Norwegian Prime Minister.
The formal recognition is to take place on May 28.
Of the UN's 193 member states, 143 – including Sweden – have previously recognized Palestine as an independent state.
