Reddit and OpenAI have concluded a licensing deal, the companies reported on Thursday. Under the deal, OpenAI may use Reddit posts, among other things, to train its LLMs. The company will also become an advertising partner of Reddit.
The social media platform announced the partnership in a blog post on Thursday. Reddit reports that OpenAI will not only use messages to train its artificial intelligence, but that the platform will also have AI features for users and moderators. It is not known how much OpenAI paid for the licensing deal. Reddit previously signed a licensing deal with Google, which paid $60 million for it.
Reddit announced last year that companies must pay if they want to use its Data API and had changed its terms and conditions updated. The platform has imposed certain limits, but not everywhere. This way, the API remains available to developers who build bots and extensions that help moderate subreddits. However, a number of third-party apps, including Apollo, BaconReader and Sync, were forced to close because the costs became too high. There were many protests on Reddit following the changed API policy.
