Google will make its Gemini AI available to educational institutions from May 23. It will then be offered in two Workspace packages for schools. The company emphasizes that the function is only available to teachers and students aged 18 and older.
Google reports in a blog post that the packages are equipped with 'additional privacy protection measures'. For example, teaching materials and reports that students write are not used to train the AI and the data is not shared with third parties. However, this means that the school accounts can only use Gemini 1.0. Newer versions, such as Gemini 1.5, are not available through the education packages. Google also points out Gemini's double check function, which teachers can use to see whether the answers in reports resemble answers generated by Gemini.
The two packages that will be released soon are called Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium. The first package is cheaper and has a monthly usage limit for Gemini. Admins can track how many accounts use the feature. The more expensive Premium package offers everything in the standard package, plus advanced features such as an AI note-taking function and creating summaries in Meet. It is not yet known exactly what the packages will cost and whether they will be immediately available in all regions. Gemini became available for other Workspace subscriptions earlier this year and has been available since April.
