Foreign. An investigation found that Daniel Perry, who shot and killed a Black Lives Matter protester in 2020, acted in self-defense. But Perry was still sentenced to prison — and now he's being pardoned by Texas conservative Gov. Greg Abbott.

– Texas has one of the strongest self-defense laws and they can not be overturned by a jury or by a left-leaning district attorney, Abbott said in a statement Thursday.
Abbott came down hard on left-wing prosecutor José Garza, writing in a formal statement that the prosecutor had “shown evidence of unethical and partisan misconduct of office when he prosecuted Daniel Scott Perry.”
Less than 24 hours after an April 2023 jury found Perry guilty of murder, Abbott said on social media that he would approve a pardon if one were recommended by Texas Board of Corrections.
The announcement came after several conservative debaters urged him to overturn Perry's prison sentence.
– I spoke with Daniel Perry this afternoon. He is happy and excited to be free. He is also optimistic about his future, says Perry's lawyer in a statement.
