The elections in Belgium on June 9 are expected to give a big victory for Vlaams Belang, which tops the latest opinion polls by a wide margin and 28 percent of voter support.

The left in Flanders is worried after the party made several proposals to encourage people to have children, which is seen as reminiscent of ” the right-wing extremist” Viktor Orban in Hungary.

In the last ten years, the number of births in Flanders has decreased from 1.81 to 1.53 children per woman. Good news for those who wish to see a population change – but a point of concern for many others.

The party now has as a new political goal to create the conditions for women to have children before 30. Something that caused the left to react strongly.

But in its party programme, Vlaams Belang now writes that “the encouragement of earlier births is a legitimate goal because it corresponds to biological reality and thus contributes to the health of women and children.”
