Google announces Wear OS 5 with better battery life and adjustments to watch faces

Google has announced Wear OS 5, a new version of its operating system for watches. This includes improvements in battery life when using apps such as Google Maps, which means that watches have to work longer on a battery charge.

In addition to battery life, the most important changes are in the options for watch faces, Google says. From the end of this year, support for new watch faces made for AndroidX will stop. Current watch faces can still receive updates.

Instead, Google is pushing its own Watch Face Format. In version two, developers can now use weather data in watch faces. There are also new types of complications and developers can offer users options with, for example, different themes. These are called Flavors and include colors and different layouts.

In addition, there will be more options to make the interface responsive based on the screen size of the watch. Above a certain threshold of size and pixel density, developers can determine that extra buttons will be added to the interface or that extra text will be visible.

Wear OS 5 will be available later this year and is based on Android 14 from last year. year. In recent years, upgrades were first released for watches from Google itself and those from Samsung. How that will work this year is still unknown.
