The proposal involves a tightening of the city's purchasing rules and aims to avoid, as far as possible, goods from countries that, according to the board, occupy other states.
In addition to Israel, countries such as Morocco and Russia are also mentioned as “occupation powers”.
However, it is unclear whether Gothenburg currently even buys goods from these countries.
– We do not know that exactly today, says Jonas Attenius (S), chairman of the municipal board, to SVT.
– Gothenburgers' tax money should not go to occupation forces, he continues.
Opposition Councilor Axel Josefson (M) is critical of the proposal.
– I think it is populism, and sits in the lap of Hamas, he says.
“Now we boycott Israel”
Gertrud Ingelman, local V politician, comments on the plan as follows:< /p>
Now we boycott Israel. As the first municipality in Sweden, Gothenburg will stop buying Israeli goods. It is up to the outside world to put pressure on Israel, therefore it is important to boycott Israeli goods.
