Logius makes second part of DigiD source code open source

Logius has once again made the source code of the underlying DigiD software open source. This is the second part of the DigiD app that is made public by the organization. The first part was published in 2023.

The source code can be viewed on the GitHub page of the Dutch Ministry of the Interior. The source code can currently still be found as a 'photo', says Logius, but it should also be able to be published as a 'film' in the long term. New versions are then also made public, which according to Logius is not yet possible. The software must first be made suitable for this and the organization must be ready to 'support this different way of working'. “And it takes time to do this carefully, in addition to the daily work to ensure that DigiD continues to work safely and reliably.”

Logius received an 'Open Government Act' request in June 2022. Based on that request, the organization started investigating how the source code of DigiD can be made public in a responsible manner, Alexandra van Huffelen, outgoing State Secretary for Digitalization, wrote in a letter to the House of Representatives in 2023.

There it was decided to make the source code public in two phases. The source code of the DigiD mobile app was published in 2023; The source code of the DigiD software running at Logius has now also been published. Prior to the publication of this part of the code, an external organization conducted an extensive study to “achieve responsible release”, says Logius.
