'OpenAI announces search engine based on ChatGPT on Monday'

OpenAI would like to announce its own search engine next week, sources within the company told Reuters. That search engine is based on the ChatGPT model and would include references to sources and up-to-date information.

According to Reuters, two anonymous sources say that OpenAI plans to announce its own search engine on Monday. There have been rumors for some time that OpenAI wants to set up its own search engine, which could compete directly with Google. Until now it was not clear whether this would be available in the first place and when that would be.

If OpenAI indeed announces the tool on Monday, that is striking timing. Google's I/O developer conference starts on Tuesday, which will probably largely focus on AI.

According to Reuters sources, OpenAI's search engine would be based on ChatGPT, but it is not clear on which version of the AI. In any case, the search engine would be able to search directly on the Internet for current information, something that the current ChatGPT system cannot do. In addition, the search engine would provide source information so that users can click through to information. That is also currently missing from ChatGPT, but competitors such as Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Bing do.

Update: the article initially stated that OpenAI will release the search engine on Monday. That is incorrect; the company was rumored to announce it then.
